Greek Minister of Energy and Environment Kostas Skrekas announced that they will increase their 2030 energy storage target.

In a meeting with members of the US House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee, Skrekas stated that their country’s renewable energy capacity for 2030 will exceed the current target of 20 GW and that they will increase their energy storage target accordingly from 1.5 GWh to 3 GWh.

On April 4, 2022, renewable energy sources accounted for a record-high 68% of electricity production in Greece, and for the first time in the country’s history, interruptions had to be made in renewable energy production due to exceeding demand.

The 2030 target was 18.9 GW.

The country aims to achieve 18.9 GW of installed renewable energy capacity by 2030 and to provide 70% of the country’s electricity consumption from renewable sources.

During the meeting, the Greek minister also mentioned that the first National Climate Law, which will include the country’s greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, will be presented to the parliament in the coming days.

Kostas Skrekas also stated that they are working on making buildings in Greece more energy-efficient, promoting electromobility, and decarbonizing Greek islands in the Aegean Sea through the Gr-Eco Islands initiative.
