Storage applications have exceeded 67 GW.

Mustafa Yılmaz, the President of the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK), has made a statement about the applications made by energy investors for ‘electricity generation facilities with storage.’

According to Yılmaz, a total of 909 facilities have been applied for, which could have a total installed capacity of 67,349 MW.

Of these applications, 334 are solar energy projects, which could have a total installed capacity of 19,881 MW, and 575 are projects that could have a total installed capacity of 47,468 MW.

“There is a demand for a $110 billion investment”

In his statement, Mustafa Yılmaz said:

“A record number of applications have been made to our institution to establish wind and solar power plants with storage since the regulation was announced just two weeks ago. There is currently a demand for an investment of up to $110 billion. Taking into account the existing capacity, we expect $40-45 billion of this amount to be reflected in the field. This appetite shown by investors is prideful for our sector and country. When we said ‘a new era is beginning in the energy sector,’ it wasn’t an empty slogan. We made this regulation believing in our country’s potential and trusting that our investors will not be disappointed. Not only in terms of investment amount, but also in terms of employment, development of domestic technologies and battery production, our country has very promising days ahead. We also thank our President and Ministry, who have always supported us throughout this process.”

The legal framework for energy storage was largely completed with six separate regulatory changes and eleven separate Council Decisions published in the Official Gazette on November 19, 2022.

On November 1, 2022, at the Turkish Wind Energy Congress, EPDK President Mustafa Yılmaz stated that they received between 20-30 GW of applications to build energy storage facilities.
